What is green building?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines green building as “the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle from sitting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort. Green building is also known as a sustainable or high-performance building.”
Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment through efficient use of energy, water, and other resources; protection of occupant health and improving employee productivity; and reduction of waste, pollution, and environmental degradation.
What are the benefits of green building?
The built environment, which refers to the structures and all other things constructed by human beings, has a significant impact on the natural environment, human health, and the economy. By following these green building strategies, it will lead to increased economic and environmental performance. Green construction methods can be integrated into buildings at any stage, from design and construction, to renovation and deconstruction.
Here are some benefits of green building:
1. Environmental benefits
· Enhance and protect biodiversity and ecosystems
· Improve air and water quality
· Reduce waste streams
· Conserve and restore natural resources
2. Economic benefits
· Reduce operating costs
· Create, expand, and shape markets for green product and services
· Improve occupant productivity
· Optimize life-cycle economic performance
3. Social benefits
· Enhance occupant comfort and health
· Heighten aesthetic qualities
· Minimize strain on local infrastructure
· Improve overall quality of life
How is a green building recognized in the Philippines?
In the Philippines, the Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE) Green Building Rating System is used to assess, measure, monitor, and certify the performance of green building projects above and beyond existing national and local building and environmental laws, regulations, and mandatory standards. It was developed by the Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC) under the BERDE Program and recognized by the Philippine government, through the Department of Energy (DOE), as the National Voluntary Green Building Rating System.
The BERDE Program was created by PHILGBC as an appropriate response to the Philippine building industry’s need to proactively address the negative environmental challenges in the property sector.
